About

Hello! If you're curious about me or the name of the blog, read on down!

About me - Hello! My name is Vijay Shah (Vijay Shah and "temporubato88" on YouTube) and I am a senior at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities studying chemical engineering. Among several hobbies, I really enjoy listening to (mostly) classical music. I primarily play the clarinet, and play piano every now and again. I also compose music while off school and write short poems from time to time.

About the name - Given that I started writing on this blog on the birthday of my favorite composer, Johannes Brahms, I thought it would be appropriate to connect the title of the blog to his life in some way. I settled on "The Red Hedgehog" as there was a restaurant with the same name in Vienna (German: zum roten Igel) that Brahms swore by; several Romantic composers, including Brahms's good friend Robert Schumann, also frequented there.

About the blog - I was convinced on May 7, 2020 by a friend (thanks, Samira!) to start a music blog after creating a table of daily music recommendations for a short list of friends on Google Docs (screenshot below of part of the table as of May 12, 2020). Rather than only writing there, and having only one recommendation per instrumentation (solo/chamber/large chamber/full orchestra) each day, why not just post as frequently as I like - and be able to talk about each piece?

With the virus outbreak of 2020 (and the upending of future plans for many college students like myself), I decided this would be one of several ways to spend my summer. As I've never really had the time as a college student to analyze and appreciate classical music as much as I would like, this seemed like a good thing to try. And I started on Brahms's birthday. What better way to begin? :)
